We are seeking to recruit a Senior Transport Planner or Senior Transport Modeller to join our Highway and Multi Modal Planning team within our Transport Planning Business to help win and deliver projects. This role is a full time permanent role to be located in Bedford, Bedfordshire, where we have a team of Transport Planning and Development Planning professionals.
We are located just 35 minutes north from London St Pancras / Kings Cross and within commuting distance to Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire. We are also in the middle of the Oxford to Cambridge economic growth region.

Our Highway and Multi-Modal Planning team, within the Transport Planning business sector, plan and evaluate future transport schemes, forecast demand and revenue, undertake economic appraisal, develop business cases, formulate transport strategies and determine the relationships between spatial planning and transport.
We undertake transport modelling at a national, regional, local level as well as detailed micro-simulation.
We work collaboratively with colleagues across AECOM’s many disciplines, including planners, designers, engineers, regeneration and environmental specialists, both within the Bedford office and across AECOM’s many offices in the South East and elsewhere in the UK and abroad.
Our current UK public sector clients include Highways England, local authorities, Transport for London and London boroughs. We have and are providing the transport planning lead on a variety of the region’s major transport infrastructure projects.
An ideal Senior Transport Planner or Senior Transport Modeller will come from an analytical background, such as engineering, geography, mathematics or economics and will have experience in transport planning and possess key responsibilities listed below. We value a combination of analytical and communication skills, with a creative and enthusiastic approach to problem solving. We are seeking an individual with an in depth appreciation of their chosen area with good knowledge of wider transport planning issues. As a Senior Transport Planner or Senior Transport Modeller, your responsibilities will include the following:
Mentor graduates, impart your wisdom and check tasks undertaken by your more junior colleagues;
Ability to handle the project management of smaller projects, including cost control and client liaison;
Contribute to and attend industry events and conferences;
Manage your and others’ time and deliver successful projects; and
Keep clients happy and engaged.
Proven analytical, data manipulation or statistical skills using appropriate software;
Knowledge and experience in transport demand and supply modelling, forecasting and experience in appraisal and evaluation of transport proposals;
Good knowledge of some or all of transport modelling related software packages e.g. SATURN, VISUM, VISSIM, PARAMICS, CUBE, EMME, TUBA as wells as knowledge and experience of GIS software;
Good knowledge and familiarity with key guidance documents, such as WebTAG;
Self-motivation and capability to undertake specific tasks with minimum supervision;
Ability to manage own time to meet project deadlines;
Good presentation skills;
Good technical writing capability;
Capability to set out specific tasks and supervise others in the completion of these tasks;
The ability to communicate technical and management aspects of work to senior staff;
Proven experience in a number of areas within transport planning and modelling;
Knowledge of project budgetary issues and the capability to deliver work to time and budget;
The ability to communicate technical concepts and provide a level of supervision to more junior staff; and
Flexibility to travel to other AECOM and client offices, depending on project requirements.
Membership or working towards membership of a chartered professional institution such as CIHT, TPS, CILT or ICE;
A Master’s degree or PhD in Transport Planning or related subject/social based discipline.
