Job Summary
AECOM is currently seeking to hire Associate Director to be based at Birmingham. AECOM’s Transportation business is at the forefront of shaping the future of transport and we are currently looking to grow our Birmingham Traffic & Local Roads Team.
Our Local Roads Team has an excellent reputation for Traffic and Highway Engineering skills including an established track record of successfully delivering a wide variety of award winning projects to both local and national clients. Our team is currently involved with a number of high profile projects with a variety of clients in the UK, including Highways England, HS2, Transport for London, Transport for the West Midlands and Birmingham City Council.
Our current portfolio of work comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international traffic and local roads schemes including Highways England Spatial Planning, Highways England CDF contract, TfWM’s SPRINT Routes, Transport for London’s Cycle Superhighways, Midland Highways Alliance and numerous Local Authority transport infrastructure schemes.
Job Duties:
As the Associate Director you will be responsible for the Traffic & Local Roads team delivery of engineering projects for local transport, urban design/streetscape schemes in our Birmingham Traffic and Local Roads team.
The requirements of the position include:
Establish strong working relationships with local clients through business development and being the key point of contact for meetings and client liaison
Develop strong working relationships with other internal teams within AECOM’s Transportation division, working with colleagues to deliver marketing and business development objectives in both the local region and nationally
Prepare detailed proposals, client briefs and fee proposals and contribute to major bids as required
Ensure technical content and quality of output produced is in line with the project brief
Oversee the preparation of feasibility, preliminary and detailed designs for traffic engineering schemes
Oversee the preparation of detailed technical reports providing specialist technical contributions as required
Act as a Project Director and Project Manager including monitoring financial performance. Comprehensive training on AECOM’s project management system will be provided
Pro-actively contribute to the management of the Traffic and Local Roads team, deputising for Traffic and Local Roads District Leader as required
Pro-actively support recruitment activity to continue to grow the local team.
Manage career progression of line reports
Monitor team skills and ensure they are up to date with current best practice, techniques and innovation
Promote a health and safety focused culture by undertaking mandatory duties, ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for the project team members, and fulfilling all responsibilities for health and safety in design
Specific Skills Required:
Substanial appropriate previous experience of public/private sector working
Detailed knowledge of emerging best practices in transport, traffic, public realm and urban design
Experience in running projects from concept stage through to completion including Client and Design Team liaison
Proven bid writing and work winning experience
Experience of undertaking a Project Manager and/or Project Director role
Experienced in leading multidisciplinary design teams
Excellent oral, written and presentation skills

Minimum Requirements
A successful track record of work winning including preparation of high quality technical bids and proposals
Demonstrated experience in developing business and forming strong client relationships including an ability to deal directly with clients and engage and influence at a senior level within client organisations
A successful track record in the management and delivery of a portfolio of traffic engineering projects including an ability to effectively manage project commercial risks
A proven ability of managing and growing a team, with strong leadership skills and the ability to develop and maintain a highly motivated project delivery team
A good industry profile with the gravitas to represent AECOM with major clients.
An ability to demonstrate high level of experience and technical expertise in some or all of the following areas:
Traffic engineering/management design
Cycling and walking design
Traffic signal design
Bus priority and BRT
Road safety audits, analysis and design
Traffic signing and wayfinding
Parking, road safety and public transport design
Traffic Regulation Orders and parking
Traffic modelling software (e.g. VISSIM, TRANSYT and LinSig etc.)
A flexible approach to supporting project and business development activities across UK and Ireland plus wider AECOM geographies
Preferred Qualifications
- HND, Degree or Master or equivalent qualification in an analytical subject such as Engineering, Mathematics or Geography
