Job Summary

Job Title: Apprentice Geotechnical Engineer (L6)

Business Line: Environment and Ground Engineering/ Ground, Energy & Transaction Solutions (GETS)

Locations: Basingstoke (also in Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Croydon, and Chesterfield)

Our Ground Engineering UK&I team comprises 200 staff and provides services ranging from project management, feasibility studies, detailed design, contract administration and construction supervision for geotechnical works in UK&I and overseas. We support internal and external clients on a wide variety of projects, but predominantly in road, rail, airports, ports and harbours, flood alleviation, nuclear power and waste management, commercial and industrial developments, landslip investigation and remediation.

We work for leading UK clients including National Highways, Network Rail, Homes England, Local Authorities, Sellafield Ltd as well as for leading contractors and developers and for overseas clients. We have an impressive portfolio of regional and national projects including Thames Tideway, Lower Thames Crossing ground investigations, HS2, Mersey Gateway, Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, M6 21a to 26 Smart motorway, A303 Stonehenge Road improvement, Northern Hub Ordsall Chord, and Trafford Park Metrolink.

We are looking to grow our Geotechnical team in a number of locations (Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Croydon, Basingstoke, and Chesterfield) and currently have an opportunity for an Apprentice to join us in Basingstoke and work towards completing the Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship with the University of Portsmouth on their day release programme.

The programme is expected to take 5 years to complete, and applicants must be willing to commit to the 5-year programme, subject to successful completion of an initial 6-month probationary period at AECOM.

You'll typically go to university 1 day a week for around 30 weeks every year to attend lectures, seminars and workshops. On the weeks you don't go to university, you'll still spend 20% of your time studying or training away from your normal working environment. The accredited apprenticeship would be full time, with 20% of time spent on off-the-job training. This typically comprises four days spent working at AECOM and one day per week spent on day release to the University of Portsmouth.

This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Permanent Way Institution on behalf of the Engineering Council as:

  • fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

  • partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

You will work alongside structural engineers, infrastructure teams, planners and other environmental specialists on a wide range of projects for a variety of Clients.

Geotechnical apprentices at AECOM will work on a range of projects, involving work such as:

  • Attend design team/ client meetings and work alongside team members.

  • On the job learning, with the necessary training and support.

  • Desk studies, site inspections, rockface surveys and geomorphological mapping.

  • Contribute to the planning and procurement of ground investigations.

  • Supervise ground investigation fieldwork, including logging, data collection, monitoring, sampling and supervising contractors.

  • Geological interpretation and preparation of interpretative reports.

  • Analysis of geotechnical data, preparation of ground models, design calculations and reporting on foundations, retaining walls, soil slope stability, earthworks, rock slope stabilisation.

  • AECOM has a range of 2D and 3D numerical analysis software, candidates with an interest in this area will have the opportunity to develop modelling skills.

AECOM’s Green Teams drive forward environmental initiatives and arrange activities throughout the year to support those initiatives.

All AECOM employees are entitled to spend up to 2 working days per year to undertake Corporate Social Responsibility activities, which may be STEM-based events at local schools or may be other activities aimed at supporting charities and / or the local community.

Each AECOM office organises a range of sports and social activities and events which all AECOM employees are welcome to participate in.

Minimum Requirements

No work experience is necessary. This position is ideally suited to school leavers at GCSE or A-Level (or equivalent) who can demonstrate the following:

  • Minimum of 5 GCSE’s (or equivalent) at grade ‘C/4’ or above, including Mathematics & English AND

  • Three A-Levels (or equivalent) amounting to 104 - 112 points including mathematics at grade C. (Numerate science at grade C). A pass in the practical element of science A levels must be achieved at grade 'C' or above OR

  • An MMD BTEC with Distinction in maths modules.

In addition, we are looking for someone who is:

  • Hardworking and motivated with a collaborative team approach.

  • Demonstrate an interest and a desire to pursue a career in Ground Engineering.

  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication and report writing skills with computer skills in MSWord, MS Excel.

  • Some work experience or shadowing in an engineering environment would be an advantage.

  • Show an aptitude towards software-based engineering and drawing e.g., Computer Aided Design (CAD) and other similar 3D software.

  • Commitment to continued education and improvement through on-the-job learning and training opportunities.

  • Creative, practical, adaptable and enthusiastic.

  • Ability to demonstrate attention to detail.

  • Ability to think in a methodical way to design, plan and organise parts of projects.

  • English language proficient, holding excellent communication skills to present information in speech, drawings and reports.
