Position Title Principal Engineer (Traffic & Local Roads)

Job Summary

We are recruiting for a Principal Traffic Engineer to join our Birmingham Traffic Team. The Principal Engineer will be responsible for the delivery of traffic engineering, local transport, urban design/streetscape schemes in our Traffic and Local Roads team.

Job Duties

  • Applicants should have a successful track record in the management and delivery of a portfolio of traffic engineering, local transport, urban design/streetscape and local authority/municipal highway schemes

  • An ability to demonstrate high level of experience and expertise in Preliminary and detailed design including 3D design

  • Ensure technical content and quality of output produced is in line with the project brief.

  • Lead the preparation preliminary or detailed design and project delivery of traffic engineering, local transport, urban design/streetscape and local authority/municipal highway schemes

  • Lead the preparation of detailed technical reports providing specialist technical contributions as required.

  • Monitor team skills and ensure they are up to date with current best practice, techniques and innovation.

  • Support Senior Management of Local Roads team.

  • Manage career progression of line reports.

  • Actively recruit to grow the team.

  • Prepare detailed client briefs and fee proposals and contribute to major bids.

  • Develop new and existing client relationships.

  • Preparation of technical reports and checking work/specifications of junior staff.

Specific Skills Required:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, Geography, Economics, Planning or a related discipline.

  • Proven ability of leading single and multi-disciplined projects as Project Manager / Task Leader.

  • Experience of dealing directly with Clients, Local Authorities and Key Stakeholders.

  • Demonstrable experience in traffic engineering design (including traffic management, cycling, walking, public transport and parking design) at concept, feasibility and preliminary stages.

  • Experience in traffic modelling including LINSIG, TRANSYT and VISSIM / Paramics.

  • Understanding of Health and Safety requirements including CDM responsibilities.

  • Reasonable geographical flexibility to support project and business requirements.

We would consider the role on either a full or part-time basis and are happy to look at a range of different working patterns.

Minimum Requirements

  • HND, Degree or Master or equivalent qualification in an analytical subject such as Engineering, Mathematics or Geography

Preferred Qualifications

  • A successful track record in the management and delivery of a portfolio of traffic engineering, local transport urban design/streetscape and local authority/municipal highway schemes.

  • Experience in the design of cycle infrastructure in the urban/suburban environment

  • Excellent technical and communication skills.

  • An ability to demonstrate high level of experience and expertise in the following areas:

  • Preliminary design (detailed/3D design desirable)

  • Applying relevant design standards including good working knowledge of LCDS

  • Leading single and multi-disciplinary projects as project manager/ task leader.
