Job Summary

AECOM are looking for an enthusiastic and driven Principal Transport Planner to focus on Transport Modelling in our Birmingham Colmore office. This experienced Transport Modeller will join a 25+ persons strong Transport Planning Team who specifically provide Spatial Planning, and Transportation advice and support to a range of clients positively shaping their operational, development, regeneration and stakeholder engagement activities. This Transport Planning team is embedded into the 50+ professional Transportation team in the city centre office. Our work spans the assessment of the impact of development on the transport network, identifying the most appropriate transport solutions, or advising and supporting innovation for local and major national and international clients. The Birmingham AECOM Transport Planning team work collaboratively with our 400+ local colleagues in Birmingham and the rest of the wider AECOM Transportation teams across the UK and Ireland to create innovative solutions for our clients’ problems.

We offer a range of exciting projects to work on with local, national and international problems to solve to keep you busy. As a Principal Transport Planner / Principal Transport Modeller you will be working with clients such as Local Highway and Planning Authorities, Highways England, Transport for the West Midlands and Local Enterprise Partnerships you will be:

  • Developing and maintaining Strategic Traffic Models such as Saturn, VISUM and micro-simulation models such as VISSIM to support business cases and decision making

  • Preparing and reviewing reports and technical transportation studies for clients

  • Liaising and presenting to clients and key stakeholders

  • Be proficient with standard Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, GIS software.

  • Leading the commercial and technical project management on small and medium-sized projects.

  • Preparing strategic and full business cases and associated economic analysis in accordance with guidance for transportation and highways schemes

  • Preparing reports and technical transportation studies for clients

  • Supporting and managing junior colleagues to support their general development and specific transport planning skills.

  • Be proficient with specialist software such as Saturn, VISSIM, Junction Models, Economic Assessment tools such as TUBA and COBALT.

  • Taking a lead on some of the teams’ business development activities, including networking and bid writing.

Minimum Requirements

  • An analytical mind and background – you want to know the why’s and wherefores of things, especially if they transport related;

  • Knowledge and experience in transport modelling and forecasting and experience in appraisal and evaluation of transport proposals;

  • Proficient user of simulation software packages including one or more of the following - SATURN, PARAMICS, CUBE, EMME, VISUM, VISSIM, TUBA and spreadsheet modelling;

  • Good time management skills to ensure you meet those pesky deadlines;

  • Strong technical and report writing skills;

  • Good communication skills to explain technical concepts to others, especially junior colleagues

  • A degree in Transportation or associated discipline

  • Experience in strategic modelling and business case work

  • Full membership or working towards membership of a chartered professional institution such as CIHT, TPS, CILT or ICE

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s Degree in an appropriate discipline

  • Chartered Membership of an appropriate Professional Institute or body
