Job Summary

Are you a Coastal Consultant with experience working as part of project teams developing a range of coastal management and engineering schemes from initial concept through to implementation? We have an exciting opportunity in our established Maritime team, that can be based in Basingstoke, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton or Plymouth, however remote working/working from home will form part of the future arrangements.

The Team

You will be joining of a global team of 450+ maritime specialists who support on a wide range of coastal projects including shoreline management plans, coastal strategies, beach design and FCERM schemes. The team also deliver a range of maritime projects including container terminals, LNG facilities, waterfront developments, cruise and ferry terminals, marinas and harbours.

Our South West Maritime teams have an established track record of successfully delivering coastal and maritime projects to a range of UK and international clients including government agencies, local authorities international financial institutions and private developers.

As a Coastal Consultant, you will have experience in delivering a range of coastal management and FCERM projects in a technical capacity. You will also oversee or manage smaller schemes or work packages to a high quality, on time and to budget. You will work, as part of project teams, to develop a range of strategic or engineering solutions from initial concept through to detailed design. You may also be involved in support roles on construction supervision contracts. As part of these projects you will use a range of skills which may include defence condition assessment, coastal processes, numerical modelling, coastal environmental impact assessment, economic and option appraisal, stakeholder engagement, engineering and design and reporting.

This is a diverse role that will involve your contribution and insight to the effective delivery of its current portfolio of projects and to bids for new work within an existing team of coastal specialists and engineers.

As Coastal Consultant, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking technical work and planning activities on coastal management, policy setting, business cases (five case business model), design and climate change resilience projects;

  • Assisting with and leading on project & technical management;

  • Assisting with business development and preparation of tenders;

  • Undertaking or managing marine modelling work packages;

  • Occasional short to medium term site visits (UK and Overseas) may also become necessary depending on project requirements;

  • Supporting Graduate Engineers and providing mentorship to new members of staff;

Minimum Requirements

  • Recent experience working on coastal management / FCERM projects,

  • Good working knowledge of any of the following is highly beneficial: coastal processes, economic appraisal, stakeholder engagement, coastal modelling, DEFRA five case business, model;

  • Experience in GIS/ EXCEL data processing and analysis;

  • Experience in the design and inspection of coastal structures and defences (preferred).

  • Strong IT skills, report writing skills and the ability to communicate to a range of clients is required for this role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level, or equivalent, in Civil Engineering, Coastal Engineering, Oceanography, Geography, Environmental Coastal Engineering.

  • Ideally, or working towards, a Chartered Engineer or Water Environmental Manager with either the ICE or CIWEM.
