Do you have a passion for carbon reduction? To help our clients meet ambitious Net Zero targets we have created new and exciting leadership role for an experienced water engineering professional with knowledge and demonstrated experience of carbon reduction in design to play a crucial role supporting our established Water team. Given the national and strategic reach of this role the base is flexible across the UK & Ireland.

The Team:

Our Water team has delivered some of the most high-profile projects across the UK&I, so your projects and clients will be varied and interesting. Examples of our client base includes:

Caledonia Water Alliance for Scottish Water - we have joint responsibility for a £700m capital programme with a commitment to reduce embodied and operational carbon, supporting SW in achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040 and carbon neutrality by 2045.

Thames Water – we work across all scales of delivery from major projects such as Thames Tideway, Deephams Sewage Treatment Works upgrade to smaller infrastructure and non-infrastructure schemes, with substantial opportunities for carbon reduction.

Wessex Water – AECOM is appointed on several AMP7 frameworks, including Capital Delivery, with an increasing focus on low-carbon solutions.

The Role:

As a water engineering professional with a knowledge of carbon in design, you will work with our Water teams nationwide. You will liaise closely with other discipline areas within AECOM sharing best practice across our business and end markets. You will be active across our global technical practice network, bringing global best practice to our UK&I clients. You will be expected to drive our teams to reduce carbon in our designs, challenging the norm and bringing innovation in our delivery. You will seek innovation and trial new methods, being inquisitive by nature.

You will bring a deep understanding of all aspects of carbon in design to a variety of projects, such as waste and clean water treatment and pipeline projects for utility companies and flood risk management schemes for public sector clients. You will make a practical difference to the carbon impacts of our designs and your understanding of our client’s net zero ambitions will influence how we support them on their journey. You will be conversant in all aspects of carbon affecting the water sector, including operational emissions, embodied carbon, renewables and bioresources, capitals approach, sequestration and nature-based solutions.

Minimum Requirements

  • An experienced Engineer, carbon specialist or water professional, able to contribute to the design of projects to deliver tangible carbon benefits.

  • Able to working with multidisciplinary teams to enhance understanding, upskill our teams in carbon net zero and challenge the status quo.

  • Experienced in influencing decisions throughout the design life cycle to reduce the carbon impacts of a scheme, considering the balance of carbon against capital and operational costs and producing compelling business cases.

  • Knowledge and application of carbon accounting, calculators and tools.

  • An understanding of relevant legislative frameworks, industry standards and incentivisation schemes.

  • Comfortable advising clients, better understanding their needs and developing a convincing offer.

  • Experienced in contributing to and / or leading bids and business development initiatives.

  • Contributing to thought leadership externally to develop AECOM’s profile within the water industry.

  • An innovator, experienced at contributing to innovation and embedding new ideas into delivery teams.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Water and wastewater infrastructure and treatment project experience across feasibility, outline and detailed design and construction.

  • Experience working for contractors in a design and build environment
