We are recruiting for a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join our well established and growing South Wales regional office in Cardiff.
The position presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the success of our 190 strong national Ground Engineering team, to work with and support colleagues from a variety of engineering and environmental disciplines and specifically to assist in the growth of our Ground Engineering team and services in South Wales.
The successful candidate will be fully conversant with UK government highways design standards and procedures, and will have extensive geotechnical consultancy experience, in particular strong capability in geotechnical studies, investigation and design for highway earthworks, bridge foundations, retaining structures and strengthened earthworks.

The office is currently engaged on a number of interesting and challenging projects in Wales, as well as supporting projects in other regional offices. Our client list includes Welsh Government, South Wales Trunk Road Agency, South West Wales Regional Engineering Framework, Cardiff Council, Vale of Glamorgan Council, Pembrokeshire Council and other national clients.
Nationally our Ground Engineering team provides one-stop access to services ranging from project management, feasibility studies, detailed design, contract administration and construction supervision for geotechnical works. We work for leading UK clients including Highways England, Network Rail, Homes England, BP, Shell, Thames Water, Environment Agency and numerous Local Authorities, as well as leading contractors and developers and overseas clients.

Detailed earthworks design and ground modelling for Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station, Earthworks and Preliminary Works Contract,
Design of the central section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel,
Highways England Technical Partner Role for A303 Amesbury to Berwick Down Improvements Scheme (includes tunnel at Stonehenge),
Highway schemes including Mersey Gateway Project,
Smart motorway schemes on M62 and M6,

Job duties and key attributes:
Provide specialist technical support to both internal and external clients to a high level of technical quality and to programme and budget.
Undertake the design and reporting of a wide variety of geotechnical works including slope stability, foundations, retaining structures, tunnels, earthworks and ground improvement, and investigation and treatment of mine workings.
Supervise and manage ground investigations and ground related construction works.
Must have strong behavioural competencies with respect to client care, collaborative working, responsibility, accuracy and quality of work.
Work on a day to day basis with a high degree of independence, prioritizing and delivering tasks as required.
Provide fee estimates and manage fees and expenditure for tasks.
Play a key role in developing our services and work-streams locally.
Specific Skills Required :

A well experienced Geotechnical Engineer with proven track record in studies, investigations and geotechnical design, in particular for new build transportation infrastructure.
Possess strong problem solving and inter-personal skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; the ability to write clear and concise technical reports is essential.
Potential and desire to progress to a more senior position.
In depth knowledge and experience of relevant Eurocodes and UK standards and specifications, in particular those of Highways England (notably HD22).
Ensures that Health and Safety issues are addressed throughout the life of a project.
In depth hands on experience of routinely used geotechnical software including WALLAP and SlopeW.
In depth knowledge of a wide variety of UK ground conditions and of soil and rock design parameter selection; local knowledge and experience is advantageous.
Valid UK driving licence is essential. Willing to travel to other offices and sites within the UK.
- A degree in Civil Engineering and a relevant post graduate qualification in Geotechnical Engineering are preferred, although Engineering Geologists with appropriate design skills will be considered.
