Job Summary
We are currently recruiting for a Principal Engineer with relevant Bridges and structures experience. You will be based in our centrally located Croydon office will be part of our busy and expanding Bridges and Structures team. We are looking to enhance and grow the team with individuals with a sound technical background and who share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload. You will be joining a team of very experienced engineers and technicians, and we are looking to strengthen our position within the market as well as developing new skills and opening up to new opportunities for you and your career.
The team workload ranges from feasibility studies to scheme designs, detailed designs, assessments, inspections, construction support and management services on a wide range of bridges and associate railway infrastructure schemes. The team is involved in local, national and international work with a variety of clients both from the public and private sectors including design & build partnerships with contractors.
Our office is in the heart of Croydon, has good transport links and accommodates a multi-disciplinary transport design centre. It is home to a large and very experienced transportation structures team that is involved in all of the projects listed above plus several others. All AECOM offices work tightly together as a team, and the Croydon office has particularly close links to our Chelmsford, London and Basingstoke offices.
A list of some of the current projects which the Croydon Office is working on includes:
LoHAC North-West. - London Highways Alliance Contract is a long-term commission under which AECOM together with FM Conway is responsible for maintaining all Transport for London (TfL) highway structures in the North-West area of London.
City of London Bridges. We are responsible for the inspection and maintenance of the River Thames Bridges.
London Local Boroughs – working for many Boroughs including LB Bromley, LB Southwark, LB Ealing, LB Kingston. We are responsible for the inspection and maintenance of highway structures.
Middle East bridge design projects , working in close collaboration with our AECOM Middle East Offices
Australian Bridge design projects , working in close collaboration with our AECOM Australian Offices
Typical work could include:
Commercial and technical management of small to medium-sized teams
Designing, checking and assessing bridges, tunnels, underground structures and retaining walls to national and international standards
Inspecting bridges, tunnels, underground structures and retaining walls
Producing technical reports
Supervision and monitoring of construction
Co-ordinating the production of design drawings
Minimum Requirements
You will have a good degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and will be a Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership
You will have proven experience in the design of transportation structures and inspection and assessment
You will also have demonstrable experience in the technical and commercial management of small to medium-sized teams
Have a genuine interest in transportation structures and have good technical skills and communication skills
Experience in leading small to medium-sized teams inspecting highway and railway structures and identification of safety-related defects
Your technical background will allow you to contribute towards the maintenance of steel, reinforced concrete, and pre-stressed concrete transportation structures. Your background should also include experience in leading or mentoring small to medium-sized teams
A commitment to comply with Health and Safety at Work and meeting the needs of our Clients
Familiar with the Highways Agency’s Guidance - Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB)
Familiar with inspection practices and Bridge Condition Indicator forms (including the Inspection Manual for Highway Structures) and be able to compile electronic inspection reports
A good understanding of the basic mechanisms of structural deterioration and structure components
You will have a sound understanding of the mechanism of structural failure and deterioration, and be able to judge when urgent measures or interim controls are necessary
Preferred Qualifications
You will have a good degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and will be a Chartered Engineer or will be working toward Chartered status
If not chartered, you will need to demonstrate a clear plan to progress to Chartered Membership of a recognised Professional Institution and AECOM offers a training scheme to support you with this
