Job Summary

AECOM is looking to appoint a Senior Ecologist in Dublin, Galway or Cork to support our current project workload and the future growth of our business. The Senior / Principal Ecologist will assist and lead in the delivery of challenging technical projects throughout Northern Ireland, Ireland and Great Britain (and further afield if the candidate desires!) in terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments.

The Senior Ecologist will deliver ecological consultancy and advisory services to both internal and external clients to a high level of technical quality and to programme and budget. Current projects include high profile major transport and other infrastructure, conventional and renewable power development, international data centres, as well as other industrial, commercial and residential development projects. This is a tremendous opportunity in one of the largest ecological consultancies in the UK & Ireland for the right candidate who will have the opportunity to manage a diverse range of projects, a valued staff resource and further contribute to the growth and development of our highly successful business.

The Ecology team on the island of Ireland comprises 15 full time ecologists, based in Belfast, Dublin, Galway and Cork. We form part of the wider UK Ecology Team comprising over 240 ecologists working across the UK and Ireland. Our ecologists work in terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats. We provide clients with the full range of ecological services including specialist habitat and species surveys, impact assessment, advice on biodiversity mitigation, offsetting and enhancement, and management planning for biodiversity. AECOM is at the forefront of developing Net Gain.

Job Duties:

  • Working as part of the existing network of AECOM ecologists;

  • Assisting in the winning, delivery and management of ecological/EIA projects

  • Supporting internal clients with delivering the ecological requirements within multi-disciplinary tenders and projects;

  • Providing technical review of ecological reports and other deliverables as required;

  • Managing and mentoring staff;

  • Working independently, or with other ecologists and professionals, in the planning, delivery and management of protected species and habitat surveys, analysis and evaluation of results, impacts assessments, and the design and implementation of successful mitigation strategies including European Protected Species licence applications within budgets and deadlines;

  • Assisting with managing the technical and financial performance of projects;

  • Building and maintaining both internal and external client relationships, including providing urgent ecological response and / or advice in person, by email or over the phone;

  • Developing and promoting best practice and innovation across the ecology business;

  • Compliance with internal business management procedures, including in relation to Health and Safety and technical quality of all advice and outputs;

  • Development of the Northern Ireland Ecology team and supporting the wider environmental business goals, as required.

  • Fully qualified scientist. Utilizes scientific principles, theories, practices and existing technologies to develop technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.

  • Requires general familiarity within a broad field of scientific knowledge of reciprocal effects of the work upon other disciplines/fields.

  • Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance.

  • Works under only general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions.

  • Solves problems by use of combinations of standard procedures, modifications of standard procedures or methods developed in previous assignments.

  • Participates in planning required to achieve prescribed objectives.

  • Conducts analysis and investigation work obtained from a variety of sources.

  • Performs inspections and tests to ensure compliance.

  • Participates in developing corrective measures and procedures. Formulates hypothesis, performs research and makes recommendation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Proactive and careful approach to Health and Safety, including first aid training certificate;

  • Technical and professional proficiency with a demonstrable history of winning and delivering ecology projects to a high quality standard, on time and within budget;

  • Previous work experience in the ecology sector within a professional consultancy, or relevant NGO or academic institute;

  • Strong project management skills, including the checking and approval of proposals and project outputs and budget management;

  • Experience of ecological impact assessment, design and/or construction management on major projects in the UK and / or Ireland;

  • Excellent knowledge of UK and Ireland, and EC wildlife legislation and policy, as well as Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA), and an understanding of the planning system;

  • Proven experience of habitat, and protected species surveys;

  • Ability to record data efficiently and methodically;

  • Experience in Electronic data capture, analysis and presentation;

  • Experience in line management as well as technical leadership of teams of ecologists;

  • Professional, organised and thorough approach to work, demonstrating attention to detail and good time management;

  • Strong and versatile problem solving and inter-personal skills;

  • Proven ability to work closely and collaboratively with colleagues and clients;

  • Client focused with good interpersonal skills and team approach;

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, in particular, the ability to write concise technical reports, and computer skills in MSWord, MS Excel as a minimum;

  • Willing and able to travel to offices and sites within Northern Ireland and Ireland, and potentially GB and other international sites when required by company business;

  • Adaptable and flexible approach to work to meet peaks in demands (role is likely to involve occasional longer/and or unsociable hours and a degree of working away from home);

  • A track record in supporting the development, management and motivation of junior ecologists;

  • A hard working and highly motivated individual;

  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to continued education and improvement through CPD;

  • Full Member of CIEEM or other relevant professional body;

  • Full Driving Licence.


  • Recognised degree in a biological, science or related discipline – a relevant post graduate qualification in the one of these would be advantageous;

  • Chartered status (CEnv or CEcol);

  • Formal project management qualification;

  • Evidence of published work in the ecology field;

  • Experience of statistical analysis and the use of R or similar;

  • Evidence of having provided professional training or lecturing.

Preferred Qualifications

Technical and professional proficiency with a demonstrable history of successfully working in ecology consultancy including client liaison, participation within multi-disciplinary teams and completion of projects to a high standard, on time and within budgets. Demonstrable transferable experience in academic / not-for-profit sectors will also be considered.
