Job Description

The Principal Process Safety Consultant will work in the EHS and Process Safety team to support the development and growth of the Process Safety & Process Safety Engineering Services business across our full client base as well as into new clients. The role will operate UK wide into the target regions across the UK and Ireland and target sectors, predominantly, Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals, Oil & Gas, Food, Bulk Storage & Distribution, Renewables, Energy and Ministry of Defence.

The focus will be to work closely with the existing EHS and Remediation services teams to develop Process Safety and Process Safety Engineering as complementary to the current services delivered by AECOM.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Lead and technically contribute to the delivery of process safety assignments (DSEAR, COMAH, LOPA, HAZOP, etc.).

  • Contribute to thought leadership and processes to deliver client business benefit.

  • Satisfy clients’ needs and manage client relationships, meeting quality, cost and delivery.

  • Work with the AECOM Process Safety Group Manager, Process Safety Engineers and Process Safety Consultants to support winning of new work.

  • Active in key external organisations e.g., professional bodies, subject groups etc.

  • Active in AECOM global process safety Technical Practice Group.

  • Keep up to date with Process Engineering and Process Safety Engineering trends, legislation, deliver internal dissemination of this information.

  • Identify areas for growth in process safety consulting capabilities.

What you can bring:

  • Five to ten years demonstrable experience in a consultancy role.

  • Experience in consequence modelling software for studies such as Concept Safety Evaluations, Fire Hazard Analysis or QRA.

  • Experience in creating event trees, fault trees, incident investigations and emergency plans.

  • Prior involvement in planning and supporting hazard workshops e.g., ISD, HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, Bowtie, ALARP.

  • Proven knowledge of legislative requirement associated with major hazards, examples of which may include COMAH, Hazardous Substances Consent, Land Use Planning or Offshore Installation (Safety Case).

  • Experience in undertaking DSEAR Risk Assessments and the development of hazardous area classification documents, based on applicable standards and best practice.

  • A good understanding of project development, engineering design and asset life cycles.

  • Ability to prepare proposals, coordinate bids / proposals and win new projects.

Qualifications

Your background:

  • Experience across a range of Process Engineering and Process Safety Engineering areas including Process Engineering Design- Front End Studies through to Detailed Design, Inherent Safety in Design, Basis of Safety, Plant support and troubleshooting, verification for new projects and existing assets, supporting Hazard Studies, HAZOP, LOPA including attendance, Area Classification and DSEAR, COMAH support.

  • Knowledge and network within target sectors / regions Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals, Oil & Gas, Energy and Renewables, Food, Bulk Storage & Distribution.

  • Experience of using recognized software for process engineering.

  • Technical results-oriented professional with a high degree of enthusiasm and an entrepreneurial mindset, with excellent communication and negotiation skills.

  • Experience working in process and / or energy related industries.

  • Ability to apply your knowledge and experience to support the development of new and innovative processes and high quality technical reports.

  • Ability to provide a customer-focused service.

  • Motivated and driven to meet delivery / cost targets, without compromising quality.

  • Previous UK Security Clearance or prepared to undertake appropriate applications.

Competencies:

  • A valid, full UK Driving License.

  • A degree in an engineering or scientific discipline.

  • Chartered or Incorporated Status with an appropriate Institution or equivalent.

  • Excellent communication skills, including technical report writing and reviewing.

  • Strong, demonstrable industry experience, covering operations and capital investments (including design principles, process and standards for process plant); and knowledge of relevant UK legislation in this sector (COMAH, DSEAR).

  • Excellent knowledge of report writing and reviewing.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, organizational agility, and well-developed influencing skills, ideally in client facing roles.
