Job Summary

AECOM is seeking to hire a Sector / Business Development Lead, Water Utilities. This role is flexible in location.

Our clients are increasingly managing their design, operation and maintenance using Asset Management frameworks and complex analytical approaches (optimisation, resilience etc). By developing business with an Asset Management front-end we enter our client’s delivery chain at an earlier and higher level and provide the platform for whole-life services from our established teams.

We are growing headcount significantly in this higher margin area and require a leader for this service. Further, there is an opportunity for the successful candidate to establish a UKI centre of excellence in Asset Management which service our broader business across EMIA.

The Sector / Business Development Lead, Water Utilities is a key role reporting to our Civil Infrastructure UKI board. It provides a recognised leader who provides gravitas and credibility to AECOM’s position within the water utility market.

Job Duties:

Working as a senior member of our Water Ports & Power UKI management team and within our ‘Growth Cluster’, the focus on growth in WPP UKI is foremost in the role. Typical objectives:

  • Deliver sales and margin in the Sector to satisfy the annual budget and maintain the pipeline of work to a level that will secure future budgets, both in terms of NSR and gross margin. Track these actively and intervene to ensure delivery.

  • Contribute to a three-year Strategic Sector Development Plan (updated annually) and contribute to the three-year WPP strategic planning process. Support this overarching plan as necessary with sub-sector specialist plans or geographic plans.

  • Enhance the company’s position in the market sector by raising the corporate profile and the profiles of key individuals who are able to influence the market place For example, ensure a programme of press releases, media appearances, advertising, sponsorship, attendance at national events and client entertainment to maintain the sector profile.

  • Ensure that all marketing and bidding activity within Sector conforms to best practice.

  • Agree key pursuits and appropriate budgets for bidding.

  • Manage the pipeline of future opportunities in terms of resource planning.

  • Maintain all business development processes relevant to their sector to ensure that good information on opportunities and client engagement is up-to-date at all times.

Specific Skills Required:

You are likely to be working within the engineering or related sector, either in consultancy, utility or an infrastructure service delivery environment. The role objectives are listed below and the hire will need the skills to:

  • Be outward facing, developing the UKI market and winning sufficient work on a commercial basis to create a pipeline of work to support continuing growth within each skill area;

  • Ensure the necessary quantum and distribution of appropriate resources in UKI WPP for the pipeline of work to be delivered efficiently; and

  • Ensure the continuing development of skills, processes and knowledge capture for AECOM to be a leader in this market.

Person Specification (Behavioral Attributes):

  • You will be a recognized professional in the water utilities market place, able to demonstrate a track record of business growth and development and/or technical excellence in this area.

  • You will have an extensive network allowing you to leverage new opportunities and establish AECOM with new clients in the UK water industry.

  • You will need an appetite for building and shaping our business and will be given considerable support from our management team to achieve this.


Minimum Requirements

  • An established profile in this market, ideally in a client or similar business environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in a relevant discipline.
