AECOM Electrical Associate Design Engineer in St Albans, United Kingdom

Job Summary

AECOM is currently seeking an Electrical Engineer at Associate Director level to be based in St Albans.

The St. Albans office has an established track record of successfully delivering local and overseas projects. St. Albans is a historic market town in Hertfordshire with excellent transport links, and is only 20 minutes from Central London by train.

You will be an enthusiastic self-motivated person who has excellent written and verbal communication skills and who wants to make a difference in the electrical field of building services as well as being involved with all other disciplines. You will support major design and construction projects by performing mechanical engineering analysis and design, establishing project design requirements, agreeing design criteria and estimating assumptions, directing design consultants, supporting construction and commissioning efforts, interfacing with client’s customers, consultants, and construction firms.

Job Duties:

You will help AECOM’s Building & places discipline by supporting multiple projects and teams with direct design and delivery activities. You will be experienced in the delivery of all phases of a project from inception to completion, but specifically design focused in similar types of Projects.

You will do this by using your experience of seeing conceptual designs through to completion and dealing directly with clients. Your duties will be split between technical outputs, co-ordinating and quality control as outlined below.

Drafting, modelling & reporting:

  • To act as design team leader for projects, from feasibility through to operational phase for Building Services Projects.

  • To manage a team of engineers, specialists and coordinate and support the management team.

  • Provide support at all stages of the design process on related projects – In particular bring specialist insight into the concept design stage to ensure the subsequent design stages are developed with a winning strategy and appropriate level of innovation.

  • Be conversant with Revit/ 3D drawing production and be able to interrogate a model and help resolve coordination issues.

  • Maintain, enhance and apply both design and technical knowledge ensuring production of high-quality drawings for review by Senior team members.

  • Contribute to the update of AECOM standards.

  • Be competent to review & approve electrical engineering calculations (Amtech, Dialux, Hevacomp).

  • Relevant experience in Electrical Engineering design, including areas such as specification writing, calculations, and developing designs from first principles including low voltage distribution, lighting etc and conversant with UK codes and practices and ideally experience of overseas codes and practices.

  • Preparation of electrical design calculations, drawings, specifications, and tender documents.

  • Participate in the design progress and coordination meetings.

  • Prepare outline scheme report / technical content of the design information.

  • Prepare specifications, schedules, drawings and any other contract documents developed through the RIBA work stages.

Coordinate and communicate:

  • Experience in identifying and winning new work and building client relationships.

  • Coordination with other discipline engineers as applicable for the continuity of the design process

  • Attend progress, design team and coordination meetings where required.

  • Input to pre-qualification and selection of contractors, respond to tender queries, comment and review tender returns.

  • Attend tender / client interviews. Attend site inspection meetings.

  • Obtain the necessary information both internally and externally from Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Design Consultants for the design to proceed.

  • Liaise with clients, professional organizations, contractors, suppliers, sub-contractors and other design.

  • To write fee proposals, manage & build client and architect relationships, and win work

  • As required, to represent AECOM on industry committees and to present at conferences.

  • To maintain and enhance expertise within the team and as an individual.

  • To act as the main point of contact with Clients.

  • Identify and meet effectively the requirements and expectations of clients.

  • Able to make decisions, act on own initiative and operate in a pro-active way.

Quality Assurance:

  • Ensuring adherence to Corporate Standards.

  • Ensuring that all activities are performed in a safe manner and comply with AECOM’s H&S requirements.

  • Ensuring the relevant QA procedures are followed.

  • Maintain, develop and retain the highest appropriate standard of technical skill.

  • Ensure the project work complies with the Project Management Plan and Program.

  • Commit to continual professional development and learning on relevant technological, business and human relationship matters

Minimum Requirements

  • Experience of seeing conceptual designs through to completion and dealing directly with clients.

  • The successful candidate will Chartered or be working towards Chartership, and have proven design experience, delivering to quality, time and budget. This role will suit someone with a Electrical engineering / building services degree, who is enthusiastic & self-motivated.

  • Professional membership (MCIBSE or MIET).

  • Relevant experience in design and delivery of projects within the consulting industry (preferable).

  • Ideally you will have a track record in the design of Electrical systems on a variety of building projects, i.e. retail, mixed-use developments, hospitality, healthcare, offices and industrial etc.

  • A good understanding and use of electrical design software.

  • Excellent skills in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & PowerPoint)

  • A British Passport would be an advantage (but not essential) as we have several projects that require different levels of security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related subject

  • Engineering accreditation (CEng or equivalent) would be advantageous
