Our Environment team in St Albans is recruiting Engineering Geologists with relevant experience to join our combined consultancy and contracting business. The successful candidate will join at an exciting time as our contracting capability rapidly grows and offers the opportunity to work on a variety of engineering projects. The successful candidate will also form part of our established and highly experienced environment and ground engineering consultancy providing technical support to external clients and internal business lines, such as Transportation, Buildings and Places, and Water, both locally and nationally.
Together the Environment and Ground Engineering teams in St Albans form part of a wider Environment resource of nearly 1,000 employees located across the UK and Ireland. We have built a reputation for successfully delivering a diverse range of ground engineering and remediation schemes in the UK and overseas. The team provides services including project management, desktop studies, feasibility/options appraisal, outline and detailed design as well as construction support. Much of work is for internal project teams enabling AECOM to offer our clients a one-stop service from project inception to scheme opening. In the UK our clients include Highways England, Network Rail, Homes England, Shell, Thames Water, Rolls-Royce, the Environment Agency, numerous County Councils and Local Authorities, as well as leading contractors and developers.
Our ground engineering and remediation specialists and other environmental disciplines are now able to provide our clients the option of a full turnkey contracting package. As a Prime / Principal Contractor we can deliver a wide range of projects by providing site supervision and procuring and managing framework subcontractors to carry out the works required. To support the business at this exciting time, we are looking to recruit individuals with a developing technical ability in engineering geology and site supervision that share our enthusiasm and will contribute to our growth and success.
As an Engineering Geologist your responsibilities will include:
Preparing reports on desktop studies and site visits, Factual Ground Investigation Reports, Interpretative Reports and relevant sections of Geotechnical Design Reports as required by Eurocode 7.
Planning and preparing of ground investigations including technical specifications and contract documents for ground investigations, supervising investigations and acting as the Investigation Supervisor.
Scheduling laboratory tests, checking ground investigation Contractor’s reports, interpreting and analysing the results using software such as Excel, Surfer and gINT.
Collating, manipulating and interpreting data to provide reliable design parameters.
Attendance at meetings with contractors and clients, both external and internal, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary project design teams.
Contributing to documents required under the CDM Regulations including Construction Phase Plans, assist with the preparation of the Health and Safety File and other documents such as Environmental Management Plans.
Assisting Project Managers with contractual and logistical tasks associated with the day to day management of site works.
Carrying out your duties in accordance with AECOM’s Quality Management System and assisting with monthly progress and budget reviews.
Participating in team meetings and attending sessions to further your professional development.
To be successful you will have strong development skills, the technical ability, knowledge and competence that are appropriate for your career experience, and you will be able to demonstrate examples of practical site experience. The position will suit a person who can work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary design team, and understands the importance of delivering work packages on time and within budget.
As an Engineering Geologist:
You will have a working knowledge of UK geology, engineering geology and ground investigation practice.
You will be able to describe soils and rocks, record your findings and write clear and concise reports.
You will be aware of the UK Specification for Ground Investigation, and standards including BS 5930 and BS 1377 and awareness of specifications and contract documents.
Be familiar with technical software such as gINT, and be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
You will have some experience of supervising contractors and ground investigation works, successful contract delivery and be conversant with the regulations and standards that apply to site works.
You will be willing to travel within the UK and overseas for limited periods.
You will have a valid UK driving licence.
The following candidate attributes are highly desirable and would be a distinct advantage:
Relevant health and safety training e.g. CSCS, SSSTS, SMSTS, HAZWOPER.
Working towards Chartered status with a relevant institution
- A first class of upper second undergraduate degree in engineering geology or geology or closely related discipline.
